Today was the
Las Vegas JDRF Walk for the Cure at the LV Motor Speedway.
I work with children & families with diabetes. And nothing would make me happier than to be able to come visit a family devistated by this diagnosis with the news that "we're just going to stablize you, clear your ketones, and transfer you to xxxxxx institute for your beta-cell transplant". Instead, I have to teach blood glucose monitoring (4 to 8 finger pokes a day), insulin injections (2 to 6 injections a day), counting carbohydrates (no more eating when/where/whatever you like without thinking first), how exercise affects the body and blood sugars (usually goes down, but could go up, and affects the body up to 24 hrs later), what the person with diabetes can do during their life (lots of jobs and activities, but cannot be commercial airline pilots, commercial truck drivers; and cannot serve in the US military).
So I rallied people at my work. Twenty folks showed up (and two dogs). Together we raised over $4100 towards the cure. JDRF was started in 1970 by parents of children with diabetes. Over 80% of all money raised goes directly to research for the cure.
So, next time you see one of those colorful shoes, know that your dollar is going to a good cause!
